Drug market in Chandni Chowk, Delhi, goes vocal for local

|

New Delhi: Asia’s biggest drugs, medical and surgical equipment wholesale market Bhagirath Place in the Chandni Chowk area has stood up to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for ‘Vocal for Local’. The market, which has been dependent on from to cater the needs of India, has not let the of essential drugs and medicines decline even in trying times of the COVID pandemic by tying up with local drug manufacturers to maintain the chain.

In the quest for ‘vocal for local’, the wholesale drug market is looking state and central governments to spruce up infrastructure and other essentials so that their dependency on is minimal.

Speaking exclusively to Sirf News, Ashish Grover, the general secretary of Drug Dealer Association in Bhagirath Place, said that challenges were numerous, but with the help of government, the entire drug and market would regain a firm footing.

Bhagirath Place has about 572 wholesalers and about 500 surgical goods wholesalers. The Bhagirath Palace market is also a largest hub of import and export trade of medicinal drugs for the country.

Grover said that some of the challenges were temporary because of the COVID pandemic whereas some of the problems were permanent and needed urgent attention.

“As scores of daily wage workers, porters, rickshaw pullers, and staffs have moved back to their hometowns due to the spread of coronavirus, the impact of migration can be seen affecting the distribution chain in the capital,” said Ashish Grover.

As a permanent measure, there is urgent need to improve infrastructure of this market. “Maintaining the cleanliness and of this market should be the top priority of the municipal corporations. During rainy days, waterlogging of these congested bylanes disturbs the life and business very hard,” said Grover.

Grover added that lack of parking space was a major problem of this market. “Not only locals but also traders from all parts of country visit this market on a daily basis. So, the maintenance of law and order should be the top priority for police administration. Even one incident of pickpocketing harms the business,” Grover said.
