Devotees throng Somnath temple for ‘Mahashivratri’

Vadodara: Over one lakh devotees visited the Somnath temple in Gir Somnath district on the occasion of Mahashivratri being celebrated today.

Serpentine queues could be seen outside the temple from 4 AM. A ‘palkhi yatra’ (palanquin procession) was taken out in the town, Vijaysinh Chavda, general manager of Shri Somnath Trust said.

Devotees took dips in the holy water at the “triveni sangam” (confluence) of three rivers– Hiran, Kapila, and Saraswati, located near the temple.

Security has been beefed up in and around the temple in view of the rush of the devotees, Chavda said.

Devotees also thronged Shiva temples across Tamil Nadu today on the occasion of Mahashivarathri.

Special prayers were held in Shaivite shrines in various parts of the state, including Chennai, Tiruvannamalai, Kancheepuram, Chidambaram, and Viruthunagar.

People turned up in Shiva temples in good numbers and offered prayers, with temple managements making special arrangements to serve the devotees on the auspicious occasion.

The temples were decked up for Mahasivaratri, considered an important occasion for devotees of Lord Shiva.
