Intelligence agencies have issued a warning that there may be a fidayeen attack (suicide attack by Islamic terrorists*) on police stations in Delhi. Terrorists may target Delhi Police lines, intelligence inputs suggest. Following the alert, the security of police stations in the national capital is now being reinforced.

Special security arrangements have been made in about 200 police stations of Delhi. People who are visiting the police stations are being closely monitored. The entry of private vehicles into police stations has been banned.

According to intelligence agencies, the four or five terrorists can arrive in a car to carry out the attack on any police station situated in Delhi. They can execute the attack by ramming the car into the walls of the police station.

Intelligence agencies issued an alert to Delhi Police last week, after which vehicular traffic in and around the 200 police stations in the capital is being closely monitored.

The main gate of every police station is now closed and entry of people allowed only through the small gate. No private vehicle is being allowed inside a police station.

Sentries posted at the police stations have been alerted. They have been given special instructions.

According to sources, this alert came five days ago. According to intelligence agencies, terrorists can arrive in any type of vehicle and enter a police station and execute a big, planned attack. Following the order on cars, the alert has been upgraded. The sleuths have informed the police that the terrorists may arrive in motorcycles or scooters, too.

  • The term fidayeen is derived from Arabic فدائيون fidā’īyūn, literally meaning “those who sacrifice themselves”; fidāʼīyīn is the plural of fidāʼī, which means “sacrifice”. Hassan-i-Sabbah (circa 1050–1124), who founded the Nizari Ismaili state in Persia and Syria, had coined the term to refer to the Hashshashins. It is widely understood as “those willing to sacrifice themselves for Allah”. The group carried out an armed struggle against the Selçuk state, after which this mode of attack was adopted by Islamic terrorists in Egypt, Eritrea, Iran, Iraq, Palestine, Turkey, Pakistan and finally India.
