Dawood Ibrahim aides’ houses raided in Mumbai

The ED is conducting searches at 10 places including Nagpada, which was once a stronghold of Dawood Ibrahim whose late sister's house was raided too

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) today detained a person from Mumbai after carrying out search operations in 10 premises in the capital of Maharashtra in connection with a money-laundering probe against people and entities allegedly associated with gangster Dawood Ibrahim and his aides. Among the properties searched early in the morning was the sealed house of Dawood’s sister Haseena Parkar.

Sources said a politician from Maharashtra is under the scanner in the money laundering case that the ED is investigating. The ED team reached the house of Haseena Parkar, Dawood Ibrahim’s late sister, in connection with the raids.

An official, who was a part of the morning raids, said that the ED was conducting searches at 10 places including Nagpada, which was once a stronghold of Dawood Ibrahim. Some politicians are under the scanner too, the official said. The ED has been questioning some suspects in connection with the case.

About 70 officers of the ED conducted the searches, sources said, adding the team ran into evidence of many hawala transactions linked to money illegally obtained through extortion, real estate sale and other unlawful activities. The agency has established the money trail, linking these transactions to Dawood and his aides, the officials said.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) filed a fresh case earlier this month against the gang of Dawood Ibrahim under the stringent Unlawful Activities Act (UAPA), which is the basis of the ED investigation. The NIA named Dawood Ibrahim and several of his associates, along with their roles in terror activities against India and hawala transactions.

Dawood Ibrahim, the mastermind of the 1993 bomb blasts in Mumbai, is India’s most wanted fugitive.

Dawood Ibrahim and his associates fled to Pakistan before the 1993 Mumbai blasts, which left 257 people dead. He has been linked to multiple terror organisations and is also believed to be helping narco-terrorism through his hawala network.
