Dara Singh Chauhan quits Yogi cabinet

Another minister in the Uttar Pradesh government, BJP politician Dara Singh Chauhan, today resigned from the Yogi Adityanath a day after OBC politician and five-term MLA Swami Prasad Maurya resigned as minister for labour and employment from the state government and apparently headed to the rival Samajwadi Party, posing for a photograph with its chief Akhilesh Yadav soon after.

At least three other BJP MLAs — Roshan Lal Verma, Brijesh Prajapati and Bhagwati Prasad Sagar — said they would follow Maurya who had hinted yesterday that more politicians from the BJP would join him.

In his letter of resignation, Chauhan wrote, “As forest, environment and animal horticulture minister in the of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ji, I worked wholeheartedly for the betterment of my department, but the government’s attitude towards backward, deprived, Dalits, farmers and unemployed youth was very neglectful. As well as being hurt by the mess with the reservation of backwards and Dalits, I resign from the Uttar Pradesh cabinet.”

Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party spokesman IP Singh sent a lock as a gift to BJP headquarters in after a series of resignations in the Saffron party yesterday. The order was addressed to BJP’s Swatantra Dev Singh.

Tagging him on Twitter, IP Singh wrote: “Omprakash Rajbhar ji, Jayant Choudhary ji, Rajmata Krishna Patel ji, Sanjay Chauhan ji and now Swamiprasad Maurya ji are with Samajwadi Party. I have sent a lock to BJP headquarters, Swatantra ji as a gift. Put it after March 10 (result day) and go home. It’s not a wave, it’s an SP storm.”

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya has urged Swami Prasad Maurya to engage in talks before taking hasty decisions.

The assembly election in Uttar Pradesh will be held in seven phases from 7 February onwards. Counting of votes will take place on 10 March.
