While India witnessed the biggest surge in COVID-19 count in the past 24 h, with the states recording 5,611 coronavirus infections in the duration, the percentage-wise rate is still a reason for solace. No more than 7.9 people on an average for every lakh of the countries population are getting infected. The recovery rate should, of course, improve. It stands at 39.62%. Kerala saw one of the best recovery rates in India. Out of 642 patients, 497 people were discharged from the hospital.

But again, India is faring better than the world in mortality rate. “In terms of case mortality per lakh population, India has so far about 0.2 deaths per lakh population vis-a-vis approx. 4.1 deaths per lakh population for the world as a whole,” the ministry said in a statement.

COVID in Maharashtra

Maharashtra added over 2,000 fresh cases yesterday. Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Gujarat saw a worrying rise in daily COVID cases.

The number of deaths of COVID rose to 3,303, with 140 patients succumbing to death in the last 24 h. Maharashtra reported the highest single-day death toll of 76, which was a lion’s share of COVID fatalities yesterday.

There are now more than 37,000 COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra. The state reported 2,078 cases — more than 2,000 a day for the third consecutive day. Mumbai alone accounted for over 23,000 coronavirus cases. The state’s COVID-19 count is nearly equal to those of the next three worst-affected states put together. The COVID deaths due to infection breached the 1,300 mark in Maharashtra.

Tamil Nadu COVID-ravaged

After Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu reported the highest number of coronavirus patients. The virus infected 12,448 people in the southern state. The Koyambedu market in Chennai is now a hotspot.

Apart from Chennai, six districts witnessed a spillover of cases from the wholesale hub. One of the largest markets in Asia reported over 2,000 COVID-19 cases.

Gujarat grim

The COVID cases continue to surge in Gujarat, with the state recording 399 fresh cases in the last 24 h. The coronavirus tally in the state is now 12,140.

The death toll in the state is 719. As many as 25 people died on Tuesday.

Gujarat had the third-highest number of COVID patients.

Nationwide figures

India has about 7.9 COVID-19 positive cases per lakh population as compared to the total confirmed cases in the world, which has approximately 62 cases per lakh population, said the health ministry. “Aggressive and early measures have shown encouraging results,” the health ministry said in a statement.

The country entered the fourth phase of coronavirus lockdown this week. The union government has eased the lockdown norms to restart economic activities. The states can now decide the green, orange and red zones, following the health ministry guidelines.
