Amritsar: A sitting Congress municipal councillor Gurdeep Pehalwan was shot dead by two masked men on a motorcycle in Amritsar last evening, a senior police official said. A wrestling enthusiast, Singh was practising at the Goal Bagh Stadium when unidentified suspects shot multiple bullets, killing him on the spot.
Gurdeep Singh, a councillor from ward number 50 had gone to the stadium for practice when he was fired at by three persons at around 7.30 PM. He reportedly sustained six bullet injuries. Pehalwan was taken to a private hospital where doctors declared him dead.
DCP Singh said the police suspect old enmity between Pehalwan and gangster Jaggu Bhagwan Puria to be the reason behind the attack. Puria is lodged in Amritsar Central Jail.
The attack happened at a time when the security in the city has been stepped up in the wake of the anniversary of Operation Bluestar on 6 June.
According to Congress MLA Raj Kumar Verka, Singh had allegedly received death threats in the past.
“He had received threats before as well. We need to take this incident seriously and think about how to tackle law and order issues. This is a disgrace for the Police department and I think these gangsters have challenged the police and the government,” said Congress MLA Raj Kumar Verka.
Meanwhile, Amritsar Police Commissioner SS Srivastava said the police is actively engaged in nabbing the perpetrators.
“It is too premature to say. It is suspected to be the work of gangsters. Apparently, the victim was shot three times. We take any serious crime as a challenge and we will not only take strict legal action against them but are really going to go after them,” he said.
