Coronavirus reaches India, first case in Kerala

Other than Asif, a student of Wuhan University, 806 people in Kerala, who might have contracted the coronavirus, have been kept under observation

2019-NCOV Coronavirus has wreaked havoc in many countries after the outbreak of the disease in China. Kerala has reported the first case, it is now officially confirmed. A patient from Kerala, who has been infected with the virus, is a student of Wuhan University in China.

The patient’s condition is stable. He has been kept under observation. About 170 people have died due to coronavirus in China while more than 7,000 people are in the grip of it.

Earlier, there were two cases of patients with suspected coronavirus infection identified in Mumbai. But the contraction hasn’t been confirmed.

Hundreds of people have been kept under surveillance in many states of the country. In Kerala alone, 806 people have been kept under observation. They may be infected with the coronavirus.

Two airlines of the country, IndiGo and Air India, have announced the suspension of most of their flights to the country of origin of the coronavirus, China. India has requested China to allow it to operate two flights to bring back its citizens from Hubei Province.

The death toll by the novel coronavirus has increased to 170 in China. On Thursday, the Chinese government said 37 deaths had been reported in Hubei province from the virus. As many as 1,032 new cases have been reported in Hubei, the province most affected by the virus. The virus is also travelling. Suspected cases have been reported from as far away from China as Australia, France and the United States.

The test report of the sample of medical student Asif, who returned from China, is likely to arrive from Pune by late evening. The student is in the isolation ward of the district hospital. A sample of his saliva has been sent to the virology lab of Pune.

Coronavirus is associated with respiratory infections. Symptoms include runny nose, cough, sore throat and fever. In most cases, you may not know whether you have a normal fever or a coronavirus-induced fever. For this, you will have to undergo a lab test.

Pneumonia, swelling in the lungs, sneezing, worsening of asthma are the other symptoms. There will be a nose-and-throat test and a blood test. If coronavirus infection has reached your windpipe and lungs, it can cause pneumonia. Especially in those who are old and who have heart disease or whose immune system is weak.

To avoid this, avoid coming in contact with someone sick, cold, pneumonia. Wear a mask. Do not touch your eyes, nose and mouth. Wash hands thoroughly with soap.

Precautions against coronavirus infection

  1. Clean your hands with soap and water or alcohol with hand rub.
  2. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or bent elbow while coughing or sneezing.
  3. Avoid making close contact with people who have cold or flu-like symptoms.
  4. Cook meats and eggs well.
  5. Do not make unsafe contact with animals living in the forest and fields.
