Mumbai: After winning a gold medal in the 21st Commonwealth Games 2018, Gold medalist in women’s doubles in Table Tennis Madhurika Patkar and bronze medalist in men’s doubles Sanil Shetty received a grand welcome at the Mumbai Airport on Tuesday.
After losing to Singapore team twice in 2010 and 2014, she finally beat them in the finals. Madhurika and Omkar, who runs his own sports coaching firm, are regulars at Mulund Gymkhana, where they train together for up to three hours daily.
Madhurika Patkar said, “I am really happy and excited.”
On other hands, young BJP leader Parikshit Dhume Organised a felicitation ceremony for commonwealth games gold medalist Madhurika Patkar at Vasant lawns Thane west. He was there to receive her at the airport on behalf of the maha govt as well.
During the ceremony, her father Subhash Patkar, her husband was also presented. There was a huge crowd over there. More than 2000 strong crowd had gathered for the felicitation ceremony chanting motivational slogans for Madhurika and her family. However, Parikshit Dhume assured Madurika Patkar all help required in future and also urged her to focus on gold in Olympics.
Born in 1987 in Thane, Patkar held table tennis racket for the first time at the age of five and hasn’t let it go after that. Thane is a hub of art, culture and sports and she thinks the city can produce more sports stars provided the government steps in. “I have been coached in Thane by Shailaja Gohad since childhood and I think Thane has the potential to offer world-class coaching to sportsmen with the government’s help.”
The Indian table tennis team beat defending champions Singapore 3-1 in the team final to clinch gold at the CWG. Madhurika first beat Singapore’s Mengyu Yu beat Madhurika Patkar 13-11, 11-2, 11-6 in a singles match and then paired up with Mouma Das to beat Yihan Zhou and Mengyu Yu 11-7, 11-6, 8-11, 11-7 in the women’s doubles.
Madhurika Said, “This win has given the confidence to our Indian team that we can do well. We need to work harder for the world championship and I am sure we will reach the semifinals there.”
