New Delhi: After the ‘Chaiwala’ in 2014, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), in 2019, has begun to cash in on the sentiment attached to a watchman.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who calls himself the country’s watchman in rallies, had released a video ‘Main Bhi Chowkidar’ on Saturday. Now he has added ‘Chowkidar’ (janitor) before his name on Twitter: Chowkidar Narendra Modi.
Amit Shah, other colleagues turn ‘Chowkidar’ too
This change in Prime Minister Modi’s name appeared late Saturday after the release of the aforementioned video. However, his name continues to be just Narendra Modi on Facebook and Instagram.
Along with Modi, BJP president Amit Shah, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal and BJP’s IT cell chief Amit Malviya have put a ‘Chowkidar’ before their respective names on Twitter.
Apart from this, many prominent leaders, including JP Nadda, Raman Singh, Poonam Mahajan, have placed ‘Chowkidar’ before their names.
Congress remains reactionary, negative
For the Lok Sabha election campaign, the BJP launched a 3.45-minute long video, ‘Main Bhi Chowkidar’. Reacting to the development negatively, Congress president Rahul Gandhi led a Twitter campaign #ChowkidarChorHai (the watchman is a thief).
The Congress has been reacting negatively to BJP campaigns in this election season rather than coming up with its own agenda for the transformation of India. Doing so, it is letting the BJP decide the subject of the campaign on social media every day.
On Saturday, Gandhi, while sharing a picture, wrote, “Defensive tweet Mr Modi! You feel a little guilty?”
In the collage posted by the Congress president, there are personalities other than PM Modi. Among them is a picture of Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi, Vijay Mallya, the prominent villains in the bank scam and NPA stories in public perception. Gautam Adani and Anil Ambani are seen in the collage too.

To Gandhi’s jibe, the prime minister wrote that Modi alone was not a watchman but whoever was fighting against corruption was one.
Following Modi’s tweet, several BJP leaders tweeted messages with the hashtag #MainbhiChowkidar.
#ChowkidarPhirSe [the watchman (Narendra Modi) once again] trended too.
