The Allahabad High Court today granted former Union Minister of State for Home Chinmayanand bail. Chinmayanand is lodged in Shahjahanpur District Jail in Uttar Pradesh, facing a charge of sexual assault on a student. The court heard the bail application filed about two months ago. The court has reserved the verdict.
Earlier this month, an application was filed in the Allahabad High Court for the parole of Swami Chinmayananda. In the petition citing the poor health of Chinmayananda, it was said that he should be released from jail for some time for treatment.
Sanjay Singh, accused of demanding extortion of Rs 5 crore from the former union minister, was meanwhile released from jail on Thursday evening after the high court approved his bail application. The order of the High Court reached the court on Wednesday evening.
Chinmayanand is no longer a part of the BJP.
All the accused have so far been released from jail for demanding extortion of Rs 5 crore from Chinmayananda. First, the bail applications of the ‘victim’ and Sachin were approved. The student was then released, followed by Vikram Thakur and then Sachin. Finally, accused Sanjay Singh came out of jail on Thursday. Sanjay was arrested on 25 September.
Swami Chinmayanand, who was accused of sexual exploitation, was finally arrested in September last year after several days of struggle. The state police and the SIT team formed to investigate the case arrested him from his Mumukshu Ashram.
A law student studying in his college has accused Chinmayanand of rape and blackmail. Later, the Supreme Court had constituted a two-member special bench of the Allahabad High Court and directed it to constitute an SIT to investigate the matter.
In between, the ‘victim’ released sleazy videos showing her massaging Chinmayanand whereas followers of the swami released videos that showed her, along with a gang moving around in a car, making extortion calls and discussing how the money could be obtained.
