One of the child artistes of Makdee, Shweta Basu Prasad, now 23-year-old, was arrested by Hyderabad police in connection with a high profile prostitution racket. Basu Prasad became a household name after the success of Makdee. She won the National Film Award for Best Child Artiste for her performance in the 2002 film. She also played the role of Shreyas Talpade’s younger sister in National Award winning movie Iqbal.
In a police raid, Basu Prasad was found in an uncompromising position inside a hotel at Banjara Hills in Hyderabad with a high profile businessman, it was first reported. He turned out to be a decoy.
“Based on credible information, sleuths of Commissioner Task Force (West Zone) conducted a decoy operation at a hotel in Banjara Hills here last night and caught the actress and the organiser identified as Balu, who were allegedly involved in the flesh trade,” Task Force Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police N Koti Reddy said.
Balu, a small-time assistant director in the Telugu film industry, demanded Rs 1 lakh on behalf of the actress from a member of the decoy team.
He was given Rs 15,000, while the actress kept the remaining amount, the senior police officer said.
“The actress has been sent to a rescue home, while Balu has been taken into custody under relevant sections of the Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act (PITA) Act,” Reddy said.
This is not the first time Basu Prasad was caught in a sex racket. She was exposed in a sting operation recently. She had then reasoned that financial crisis had compelled her to take to the flesh trade.
Basu Prasad, who also worked in Telugu films and acted in Ekta Kapoor’s hit serial Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki, where she played the role of the daughter of Sakshi Tanwar’s character, said, “I have made wrong choices in my career and I was out of money. I had to support my family and some other good causes. All doors were closed and some people encouraged me to get into prostitution to earn money. I was helpless and with no option left to choose (from), I got involved in this. I’m not the only one who faced this problem and there are several other heroines who have gone through this phase.”
“Shweta Prasad was arrested on Sunday, and has been sent to a government rehabilitation home. She will be in remand for some time now. The charge-sheet will be filed within the next 10 days,” said a senior inspector of Banjara Hills police station in Hyderabad.
Basu Prasad also worked in Vaah! Life Ho Toh Aisi! (2005), Darna Zaroori Hai (2006) and television series Karishma Kaa Karishma. Actor Kiran Karmakar, who played her father in Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki, said he was shocked at the news. “She was like my daughter. I wish she comes out of this problem soon.”
