Veteran actor Rishi Kapoor died in Mumbai early today, shocking Bollywood and movie lovers alike. Celebrities from various fields including politics and cinema have been mourning and posting condolence messages on social media since the news arrived.
The 67-year-old actor had been admitted to Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital in Mumbai on Wednesday night. Wife Neetu Singh-Kapoor was by his side.
An official statement from Rishi Kapoor’s family was released. It read, “Our dear Rishi Kapoor passed away peacefully at 8:45 AM IST in hospital today after a two-year battle with leukaemia. The doctors and medical staff at the hospital said he kept them entertained to the last. He remained jovial and determined to live to the fullest right through two years of treatment across two continents. Family, friends, food and films remained his focus and everyone who met him during this time was amazed at how he did not let his illness get the better of him.”
Many celebrities including Subhash Ghai, Suresh Raina, Mridula Mahajan, Priyanka Chopra, Aamir Khan, Lata Mangeshkar, Anushka Sharma, Sachin Tendulkar, John Abraham, Kriti Sanon, Farhan Akhtar, Ajay Devgn and Shahid Kapoor poured in their condolences upon learning about Rishi’s demise.
Director Subhash Ghai told Sirf News, “He was like my family..a younger brother and a friend. I am not in a state to narrate any past stories today… Due to this lockdown..has not allowed me to even see his face for the last time. A friend with 40 years of bonding. I can’t express my grief even.”
Cricketer Suresh Raina told Sirf News, “It’s so sad and am in deep shocked with two great actors lost their lives. The year 2020 has been very tough.”
Bollywood actress Mridula Mahajan told Sirf News, “Saddened to hear about the untimely demise of Rishi Kapoor sir. One of my favourite & finest actor of Bollywood and to the world of cinema. I never had the change to work with him. It was my dream to work with him. He was a survivor. My heart goes out to the family, may you find strength in this time. RIP.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote, “Multifaceted, endearing and lively…this was Rishi Kapoor Ji. He was a powerhouse of talent. I will always recall our interactions, even on social media. He was passionate about films and India’s progress. Anguished by his demise. Condolences to his family and fans. Om Shanti.”

Amitabh Bachchan condoled the death of his co-star of many films in a tweet on Thursday morning. Akshay Kumar also tweeted calling it “heartbreaking” news. Superstar Rajinikanth said, “Heartbroken … Rest In Peace … my dearest friend.”
