West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited nephew and TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee’s house today, ahead of his wife Rujira’s appointment with the CBI. Rujira is supposed to clarify before the investigation agency about her role in the alleged coal pilferage scam.

Earlier on 21 February, a CBI officials team had visited the house of Abhishek Banerjee, a nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, to deliver the summons but Rujira was not present.

Responding to the notice from the CBI, Rujira said that she was available to answer queries on 23 February between 11 AM and 3 PM. “Though I am unaware of the reason for me being called for questioning or the subject matter of the investigation, you may visit my residence as per your convenience between 11 AM and 3 PM on 23 February 2021,” she said in her letter to CBI.

The CBI is probing a multi-crore coal scam in Bengal wherein the agency is investigating two kingpins — Anup Majhi alias Lala, and Binay Mishra. Both are absconding and have been named by the agency as proclaimed offenders. The investigating agency has issued a look-out notice against both of them.

On 22 February, a team of CBI had visited the house of TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee’s sister-in-law Menaka Gambhir in Kolkata to examine her in connection with the coal pilferage case, officials said.

Two woman officers of the CBI examined Gambhir for nearly three hours at her residence off Eastern Metropolitan Bypass after a notice was served to her on 21 February, they said.

The officers of the CBI’s anti-corruption branch sought to ascertain her financial accounts, sources said.

Abhishek, the Trinamool Congress’s MP from the Diamond Harbour constituency, is the nephew of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The CBI had registered an FIR in November last year against the alleged kingpin of the pilferage racket Manjhi alias Lala, Eastern Coalfield Ltd General Managers Amit Kumar Dhar (of then Kunustoria area now Pandaveswar area) and Jayesh Chandra Rai (Kajora area), besides ECL Chief of Security Tanmay Das, Area Security Inspector Kunustoria Dhananjay Rai and SSI cum Security in-Charge Kajor area Debashish Mukherjee.

It is alleged that accused Lala is involved in the illegal mining and theft of coal from leasehold mines of ECL in Kunustoria and Kajora areas, reports said.
