New Delhi: The CBI has booked MLA from Uttar Pradesh Kuldeep Singh Sengar, suspended from the BJP last year in April, and 10 others connected to the charge of orchestrating an accident in an attempt to kill the Unnao rape survivor, officials informed the press on Wednesday.
This adds to the charge of murder against Sengar, his family and their alleged accomplices last year. Months after the survivor made the allegation publicly, Kuldeep Sengar’s brother Atul reportedly beat her father up mercilessly. The police, instead of providing the rape survivor’s father with medical aid, arrested him for allegedly possessing illegal arms. Following this, Atul Sengar was arrested on charges of murder.
After the accident on Sunday, a First Information Report (FIR) lodged had implicated the BJP legislator, his brother Manoj Singh Sengar and eight others.
Registering an FIR afresh, which is the normal procedure, the CBI has taken over the investigation into the case of ‘accident’ from Uttar Pradesh Police. Sources said the central agency’s officials will visit the site and take details from cops of the Gurubakshganj police station in Rae Bareli where the incident took place.
Following the Uttar Pradesh government’s statement that it was willing to transfer the case to the CBI if the next of kin of the rape survivor complained, the mother of the victim had spoken to the media. The Uttar Pradesh Police on Monday filed a murder case against Sengar and nine others after the rape survivor’s family filed a complaint, alleging a conspiracy behind the accident.
Then, on Tuesday, the Centre handed over the probe to the CBI on the recommendation of the Uttar Pradesh government. The Yogi Adityanath administration had come under severe criticism for failing to provide security to the girl. She had alleged that the BJP MLA had raped her.
Last Sunday, the car in which the rape survivor, her family and lawyer were travelling was hit by an overspeeding truck in Rae Bareli. The impact killed two of the passengers and left the rape victim and her advocate critically injured.
The truck had its number plate wiped out. The driver of the truck and its owner were later arrested.
In the meantime, reports from the area say over 15 days before a road accident in Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli left the Unnao rape survivor critically injured and killed two of her relatives, the victim had written a letter to the Chief Justice of India (CJI) where she claimed that her family was facing a grave danger.
Reacting to the development, CJI Ranjan Gogoi directed the court registry to furnish details of the letter. “The CJI has asked the Secretary-General to go through the letter written in Hindi for preparing a note of it for his perusal,” an official of the Supreme Court said.
The letter assumes significance in the wake of the allegation that Kuldeep Sengar had orchestrated the ‘accident’.
Between 7 and 8 July, the letter claimed, several incidents had transpired. The rape survivor alleged through the written communication that people associated with Kuldeep Sengar, jailed since last April, had threatened her family. The letter requested the court to order the police to file a case against those who allegedly intimidate the family.
Kuldeep Sengar, a turncoat who moved from the BSP to SP to the BJP, representing the constituency of Uttar Pradesh’s Bangermau, had been arrested last April on charges of rape. The opposition has been alleging before and after the arrest that the State government is going soft on him.
Following taunts by opposition leaders including Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the Uttar Pradesh BJP said that he had been suspended from the party in 2018.
