Protests in Assam over the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) are getting fiercer, with protesters setting ablaze buses near Janta Bhawan in the capital Dispur on Wednesday. The State administration has become cautious in view of violent protests and internet services were banned in 10 districts of the state from 7 PM on Wednesday.

Curfew has been imposed on Guwahati from 6:15 PM Wednesday to 7 AM Thursday to keep law and order under control. Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta gave this information.

Internet services have been banned in Lakhimpur, Tinsukia, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Charaidev, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Kamrup Metro and Kamrup district till 12 December at 7 PM.

Meanwhile, during the protest against the CAB, passed by the Lok Sabha on 10 December and being debated in the Rajya Sabha today, clashes with the police were reported. Police fired tear gas shells at the protesters.

The Army has been called in Dibrugarh, seeing the situation spiral out of control. Many trains have either been cancelled or their routes have been diverted. The timings of many trains have been changed.

The police tried to stop the student protesters when they headed towards the secretariat in the capital of Assam. The police clashed with the students who then broke the barrier on the GS Road. The cops took recourse to lathi-charge thereafter.

Tear gas shells were fired at the students, which the students picked and threw back at the policemen. Students said that many of them were injured in lathi charge. One of them said, “There is a barbaric government led by Sarbananda Sonowal. Until the CAB is withdrawn, we will not come under any pressure.”

In the wake of the rail roko (stop trains) campaign by several organisations in the Tinsukia division of Assam, Indian Railways has cancelled its operations in several routes passing through the State. Twelve trains have been cancelled on 12 and 13 December. The plying of 10 trains has been partially halted.

The district magistrate has taken several precautionary measures in view of the raging agitation in Dibrugarh. For the protection of public peace, licences of liquor shops were revoked beginning 4 PM on Wednesday.
