Bengal Police adds insult to injury: BJP workers’ funeral stopped

BJP cadre were carrying the bodies of their colleagues killed allegedly by Trinamool goons when Bengal Police stopped the funeral procession

- Advertisment -

Kolkata: Bengal Police on Sunday blocked the passage of the hearses carrying the bodies of BJP workers killed in political violence in Sandeshkhali in Basirhat of the North 24 Parganas district. The funeral was headed for the local BJP office where the party cadre were supposed to pay their last respects to their martyred colleagues.

The blockade led to a clash between the BJP workers and the police.

Earlier in Basirhat on Saturday in the evening, a dispute over the removal of a party flag had led to a violent clash between the workers of the BJP and Trinamool. Five BJP cadre and a Trinamool worker were killed in the conflict.

Shah seeks report from Bengal govt

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has demanded a report from the Mamata Banerjee government on the violence.

BJP general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya said, ‘I am confident that the Center will take this incident seriously. People are angry about continuing political violence in the State.”

Trinamool goons killed our colleagues: BJP

Bengal BJP leader Mukul Roy has alleged that antisocial elements associated with the Trinamool killed four BJP workers in Sandeshkhali of Bashirhat. Roy said, “The goons of the Trinamool attacked our workers. Four of our people were shot dead. Trinamool leaders and Mamata Banerjee are spreading terror in the region. We have given information about this to Home Minister Amit Shah, Kailash Vijayvargiya and other State leaders.”

Roy had reported the killing of three of his colleagues earlier on Twitter.

Roy said that a team of MPs would visit the area of violence and send a report to Shah.

During the Lok Sabha election, incidents of violence between the Trinamool and BJP were witnessed in every phase in Bengal. Both the parties have been accusing each other of spreading violence.

Trinamool worker killed, too

The ruling Trinamool claimed that a worker of their party, Jyotipro Malik, has been killed in another incident. Senior State minister from the party Jyotipriyo Mallick said that BJP workers had shot and killed Trinamool supporter Qayyum Mullah after abducting him. Qayyum was allegedly shot at when he was going to participate in a Trinamool meeting.
