The West Bengal Assembly election will be held in eight phases — 27 March, 1, 6, 10, 17, 22, 26 and 29 April — and the result will be out on 2 May

The Election Commission has announced the schedule for upcoming assembly elections in four states and one union territory (Puducherry). The elections will be held for 294 seats in West Bengal, 234 seats in Tamil Nadu, 140 seats in Kerala, 126 seats in Assam and 30 seats in Puducherry.

After the Bihar assembly elections, which were held in November 2020, elections to these states will also be held amid the coronavirus pandemic. The Election Commission is expected to implement a similar protocol for voting.

The election to the West Bengal Assembly will be held in eight phases, CEC Sunil Arora announced. Voting will be held on 27 March, 1, 6, 10, 17, 22, 26 and 29 April.

Election results for all the states above will be announced on 2 May.

The election campaign in the poll-bound states has already started with leaders from different political parties, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP national president JP Nadda, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee addressing public rallies.

Bengal election schedule details

Phase 1 (30 seats) 27 March: Purulia, Bankura, Jhargram, Paschim Medinipur & Purba Medinipur

Phase 2 (30 seats) 1 April: Bankura, Paschim Medinipur, Purba Medinipur, South 24 Paraganas

Phase 3 (31 seats) 6 April: Howrah, Hooghly, North 24 Parganas

Phase 4 (44 seats) 10 April: Howrah, Hooghly, South 24 Paraganas, Alipurduar, Coochbehar

Phase 5 (45 seats) 17 April: North 24, Nadia, Purba Burdwan, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri

Phase 6 (43 seats) 22 April: Uttar Dinajpur, North 24, Nadia, Purba Budwan

Phase 7 (36 seats) 26 April: Malda, Murshidabad, Paschim Burdwan, Kolkata South, Dakshin Dinajpur

Phase 8 (35 seats) 29 April: Malda, Murshidabad, Birbhum, Kolkata North

The election for 234 seats in Tamil Nadu will be held in a single phase. Here’s the schedule: 

  • Date of issue of gazette notification: 12 March
  • Last date of nomination: 19 March
  • Scrutiny of nomination: 20 March
  • Last date of withdrawal of candidature: 22 March
  • Dates of polling: 6 April
  • Date of counting: 2 May

Here’s the election schedule for the state of Kerala. Election here will be held in a single phase.

  • Date of issue of gazette notification: 12 March
  • Scrutiny of nomination: 20 March
  • Last date of withdrawal of candidature: 22 March
  • Dates of polling: 6 April
  • Date of counting: 2 May

The Assam Assembly election will be held in three phases starting 27 March.

The election to the Puducherry Assembly will be held in a single phase on 6 April. The date of issuing the gazette notification will be 12 March. The last date of nomination is 19 March. The scrutiny of nomination will be done on 20 March. The last date of withdrawal of candidature is 22 March.
