Kolkata: Incidents of extreme violence has marred the sixth phase of Lok Sabha election in Bengal. The body of a BJP worker Raman Singh was found in the Petgindi village of Gopiballabhpur of Jhargram. A bunch of goons hit him with iron rods on his head, which caused his death almost immediately.

The BJP has accused the ruling Trinamool in the State for the murder. The Trinamool said, refuting the allegation, it has nothing to do with Raman Singh’s death.

BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya alleged that Trinamool workers entered Singh’s house and murdered him. As news of the murder spread, tension gripped the area.

Elsewhere, two BJP workers Ananta Guchhait and Ranjit Maiti were shot at in Bhagwanpur of East Medinipur (formerly Midnapore). They have been admitted to the Tamluk District Hospital.

Even in the night prior to the polling day, tension had gripped the Kanthi Lok Sabha constituency where the village above is situated as a group of BJP workers were stunned by a sudden attack allegedly by some armed hooligans of the Trinamool riding motorcycles. While a few fired at the BJP workers, others fired in the air to spread terror in the village.

Jhargram, 167 km from Kolkata, is voting in the sixth phase of the Lok Sabha election. Elections are being held in eight seats of Bengal including this one.

The Trinamool, BJP, Congress and Left Front constituents [CPI(M), CPI, Forward Bloc, RSP] are the contenders for power in West Bengal. In the sixth phase of the Lok Sabha election, people from the forest areas like Bankura, Jangalmahal, West Medinipur, Jhargram and Purulia districts are casting votes. This used to be a Maoist stronghold during the previous Left Front government’s rule.

A section of former Maoists now alleges that the Trinamool had used them to oust the CPM government but has, since 2011, neglected them. The other section now constitutes the local workers’ base in Jangalmahal.

Sirf News had earlier reported that BJP’s candidate from Ghatal, former IPS officer Bharati Ghosh, was attacked allegedly by Trinamool goons on Sunday when she tried to enter a polling booth in Keshpur, having heard of efforts to rig the poll inside.
