The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced the list of candidates who will contest for the party in Assam’s upcoming assembly elections. In a press conference, the party’s National General Secretary Arun Singh said that candidates for 70 seats are being named out of the 126 seats in Assam Assembly. The party leadership has kept aside as many as 26 seats for Asom Gana Parishad and eight seats for United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL).
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will contest from Majuli and senior minister Himanta Biswa Sarma from Jalukbari, the constituencies that they represent currently.
The list includes 11 Scheduled Tribe candidates, 4 Scheduled Caste candidates while 11 sitting MLAs have not been named in the forthcoming polls.
In 2016, BJP had routed Indian National Congress (INC) by winning 86 seats against the 26 seats won by the grand old party. Though, recently BJP ally Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) decided to join the INC-led opposition alliance. The opposition parties in Assam; INC, BPF, AGM, AIUDF, CPI, CPI(M) and CPI(ML) have joined hands.
Assam BJP president Ranjeet Dass will not contest from Sorbhog, which he currently holds, but from Patacharkuchi constituency. Sarma, at the press conference in Delhi, said the shift is due to a demand by the party karyakartas. However, a BJP said that in Sorbhog, the joint candidate of the INC-led alliance, which has both the Badruddin Ajmal-led AIUDF and three Left parties, stands a stronger chance.
In the seat-sharing deal with the AGP, the BJP has decided to contest the Barhampur constituency, fielding Jitu Goswami as its candidate. Barhampur’s sitting MLA is Prafulla Mahanta, a two-time chief minister and a key face of the Assam students’ movement of the 1980s.
Mahanta, an AGP MLA for seven consecutive terms, has represented Barhampur since 1991. He has been sidelined over a difference of opinion with the AGP leadership on several issues, including the CAA.
The assembly poll in the state will be conducted in three phases on 27 March, 1 April and 6 April the results will be declared on 2 May. While Majuli will go to polls on 27 March in the first phase, Jalukbari will be polled in the third phase and last phase on 6 April.
