Actor Anupam Kher has spoken up in defence of comedian Kapil Sharma, the organisers of whose comedy show on had allegedly refused to invite the cast and crew of The Kashmir Files, stating that the film did not boast of a star ensemble. Kher said he had been invited to the show to promote the film around two months ago, but he refused to go.

In a TV interview, Anupam Kher said, “Yeh film badi serious hai. I do not want to be a part of the (comedy) show. But I have to say, Kapil does not have any malice towards us or towards the film.”

A few days ago, director Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri had alleged that Kapil Sharma had not invited him to promote their film on The Kapil Sharma Show. The director slammed the comedian while tweeting that the makers of the comedy show had not invited the cast of The Kashmir Files to promote their movie — because his film does not have big stars.

Today, Kher spoke also of playing Pushkar Nath Pandit in the film, stating, “He (Vivek Agnihotri) knew my father’s name is Pushkar Nath. This was my tribute to my father… When I reached the set on the first day, the actor took a back seat and the person had to take the front seat.”

Kher said, “I wanted to feel the film with my soul. It was a responsibility towards the 5 lakh Kashmiri pundits who were thrown from their own home in 1990.”

The veteran actor went on to state, “I cried a lot during the film, during the shoot and afterwards. Vivek used to hug me and we cried. It was one of the most difficult roles to enact, as a person who had to represent so many.”

During the interview, when Kher’s acting was said to be akin to an Oscar performance, he said, “Let me not call it an Oscar moment. Let me say it is the greatest moment of achievement,” while recollecting his experience working in The Kashmiri Files, the first film that honestly speaks of the persecution followed by genocide and mass rapes of Hindus of Kashmir by locals and terrorists.
