Billionaire Kumar Mangalam Birla’s family said they were the victims of a racist incident at a US restaurant in Los Angeles, California. Kumar’s wife Neerja, along with her children, singer and artist Ananya and cricketer Aryaman went for a meal at Scopa restaurant, from where they were thrown out.
Ananya Birla, took to Twitter to share her ordeal at the plush LA restaurant which she alleged “literally threw” her and her family out of the premises. She accused the staff of the dining place of being “racist”.
“This restaurant @ScopaRestaurant literally threw my family and I, out of their premises. So racist. So sad. You really need to treat your customers right. Very racist. This is not okay”
The singer tweeted that her family waited three hours to eat at the restaurant and even named a waiter who she alleged was not only rude to her mother but borderline racist.
She is the daughter of Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla and educationist and mental health activist Neerja Birla.
“We waited for 3 hours to eat at your restaurant. @chefantonia Your waiter Joshua Silverman was extremely rude to my mother, bordering racist. This isn’t okay,” the 26-year-old tweeted.
The Scopa Italian Roots restaurant is an Italian-American dining place run by chef Antonia Lofaso in California.
Neerja Birla expressed her displeasure at the treatment meted out to her family at the LA restaurant.
“Very shocking ..absolutely ridiculous behaviour by @ScopaRestaurant You have no right to treat any of your customers like this,” Neerja tweeted.
In 2016, Ananya signed with Universal Music India. Her first five songs hit the 150 million mark on streaming platforms, with singles Meant To Be, Livin the Life, Hold On, Circles and Better achieving platinum status. Ananya Birla is the first Indian artist with an English language single to go platinum in India.
She released her debut EP Fingerprint in May 2019, via UMG and Island Records UK. It included Blackout featuring Vector and Wurld, which was one of the first collaborations between major artists from India and Nigeria.
