Toilet – Ek Prem Katha, inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, had ably demonstrated how a film can transcend demographics and language barriers.
A movie told through the story of a woman fighting for her hygiene rights, Akshay and Bhumi Pednekar starrer Toilet – Ek Prem Katha was produced by Neeraj Pandey and directed by Shree Narayan Singh, who delivered a strong message with a subtle punch.
The film was released on 11 August 2017.
The film was a commercial success, becoming Akshay Kumar’s highest-grossing film, and his first film to enter the 300 crore club. The film received three nominations at the 63rd Filmfare Awards, including Best Film, Best Director for Narayan Singh and Best Actor for Akshay Kumar.
The film released in 22 countries in Europe alone and over 50 countries worldwide, garnering a welcoming response not only from the Indian diaspora but audiences internationally.
Toilet – Ek Prem Katha released in mainland China in Mandarin as Toilet Hero earlier this month in over 12,000 screens. The film debuted at the top spot in its opening week at the Chinese box office, and since 8 June, it has already crossed over Rs 100 crore in the Chinese market alone.
Akshay Kumar dug a toilet in MP to promote the film. The movie trailer was released on 11 June 2017. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called it a good effort to further the message of cleanliness, as per Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. In December 2017, Bill Gates listed Toilet: Ek Prem Katha as one of the six positive things that happened in 2017.
