Akasa Air backed by Rakesh Jhunjhunwala orders 72 Boeing 737 MAX jets

SNV Aviation-owned Akasa Air said it would start flying in 2022 after getting initial clearance from the civil aviation ministry to launch India`s latest low-cost carrier

Indian low-cost airline Akasa Air placed an order for 72 737 MAX jets, a move that might help the US planemaker regain lost ground in one of the world`s most promising markets.

The orders by Akasa, which is backed by billionaire investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, are incremental orders, a Boeing said on 16 November.

Last month, SNV Aviation, which owns Akasa Air, said it expected to start flying next year after getting initial clearance from the civil aviation ministry to launch the country`s latest ultra-low-cost carrier.

Reuters reported in September that was close to winning an order for some 70 to 100 737 MAX jets from Akasa, pending separate talks on a long-term engine service deal.

India`s air safety regulator in August allowed the country`s airlines to fly the MAX jet to end its nearly two-and-a-half-years of regulatory grounding.

The 737 MAX was grounded worldwide in March 2019 after two fatal crashes in five months killed 346 people, plunging into a financial crisis, which has since been compounded by the Covid-19 outbreak.

Akasa Air hopes to begin operations in India in the summer 2022. The ultra-low cost airline aims to ‘democratize air travel’ in the country.

“India is one of the fastest-growing aviation markets in the world with an unparalleled potential. We are already witnessing a strong recovery in air travel, and we see decades of growth ahead of us,” Akasa Air CEO Vinay Dube had said speaking at the 2021 Dubai Airshow recently.

“Akasa Air’s core purpose is to help power India’s growth engine and democratize air travel by creating an inclusive environment for all Indians regardless of their socio-economic or cultural backgrounds,” he said.
