AIIMS panel head’s suicide theory a U-turn from August statement: ‘Sushant was murdered’

'There was contamination of evidence... not suitable for further examination with sanctity,' Dr Sudhir Gupta had said on TV on 22 August

After the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Forensic Medical Board ruled out the murder angle in Sushant Singh Rajput’s death in its report, a leaked audio tape of Dr. Sudhir Gupta has been accessed where he claimed that the late actor was ‘murdered’.

Times Now and Republic TV reported that a leaked audiotape has AIIMS chief Dr Gupta claiming that Sushant didn’t die by suicide but he was murdered. According to reports, he had made this statement after looking at the pictures of Sushant’s mortal remains. Sushant’s family is now demanding for a fresh forensic investigation.

On 22 August, a CBI recommendation led to the formation of the AIIMS panel, Dr Sudhir Gupta who was the head of the panel, had raised several questions on the report from the Shiv Sena-governed BMC’s Cooper Hospital. He had questioned Mumbai Police on television. Dr Gupta had made it clear that the “crime scene has not been kept intact” and also alleged there was “contamination of evidence”.

The opinion of the chief of the AIIMS panel as of 22 August 22 contradicts his view now. “Why was the autopsy done in such a hurry, was any videography done? There was contamination of evidence and is not suitable for further examination with sanctity. I had never given permission to open Sunanda Pushkar’s room for four years. There was also a case of DK Ravi in Bangalore,” he had said then.

“The panel of five doctors of Cooper conducted autopsy…only one is junior level forensic doctor…rest 4 are just medical officer. The panel must be of forensic specialist as per norms. Who constituted the medical board? What was justification for the medical board…by the police?” Dr Gupta had asked earlier.

Earlier in a statement, Dr Sudhir Gupta, AIIMS Forensic Head had said, “We have concluded our conclusive report. It is a case of hanging and death by suicide. There were no injuries over the body other than hanging. There were no marks of struggle/ scuffle in the body and clothes of the deceased.”

Reacting to the reports, Sushant’s family lawyer Vikas Singh had tweeted, “Highly perturbed with AIIMS report. Going to request CBI Director to constitute a fresh Forensic team. How could AIIMS team give a conclusive report in the absence of the body, that too on such shoddy post mortem done by Cooper hospital wherein time of death also not mentioned.”
