Darjeeling: As the outcome of Tuesday’s all-important meeting at Nabanna to find a permanent solution to the Gorkhaland issue is yet to be known, security forces in Darjeeling hills swung into action on Wednesday and rounded up a senior Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) activist for his alleged involvement in the 16 August bombing near the Kalimpong Police Station.
According to our informed sources, acting on a tip off, a team of senior police and paramilitary forces had surrounded the house of one Vijay Chetri Tuesday night at a lonely spot near Kalimpong town. They arrested him without facing any resistance.
Earlier last week, another suspected GJM worker was arrested for the same incident in which a civic volunteer was killed and a home guard had sustained serious injuries. A number of vehicles were damaged under the effect of the powerful blast on the police station wall.
Soon after his arrest, the suspect was brought to the Kalimpong police station. The police interrogated him the whole night to extract more information from him and trace the kingpin of the recent series of grenade attacks in Darjeeling hills. It is suspected that these attacks are an attempt at derailing the ongoing peace process.
GJM chief coordinator Binay Tamang was very critical about the recent incidents of violence by some unknown miscreants in Darjeeling hills during the all-party meet at Nabanna. He demanded their immediate arrest and a high-level probe to trace the real motive behind such incidents. At the same time, he had also demanded a CBI or judicial inquiry into the death of 8 GJM workers during the two-month old Gorkhaland agitation and suitable compensation to their families and to 45 other injured besides withdrawal of all cases from the party workers and no victimisation of any government employees in the hills.
